What’s to come from Victor Calderone
April 18, 2015 / by: Angela Verish
Victor Calderone is a busy guy. After releasing his first ever solo release, “Burden” on Drumcode, Calderone is now playing shows all across North America throughout 2015. Spybar Chicago was lucky enough to have the techno legend back for a long-awaited set on Friday, April 10th where he laid out a driving set for a packed crowd. Before his return, we were able to get in touch with him talk about his style and to see just what else he has in store for us.
Spybar: So I’ve noticed that you’re playing a lot of dates in North America in the upcoming months. How do you keep yourself organized when you’re so busy?
Victor Calderone: After my weekend gigs I make sure to cut out time to focus on upcoming gigs, studio time and releases. Usually have my weekly calls with my agent and assistant. I pretty much spend Tuesday to Friday in my studio planning what’s ahead.
You have a residency at Space Ibiza NY. Do you feel that having a residency gives you more flexibility with your sets?
Yes, it certainly allows for more flexibility. The fact that I’m playing longer sets allows me to settle in and take people on that journey. Very different than playing 2 to 3 hours. The MATTER+ brand has built great momentum in NY, people are excited about the night and look forward to it.
Just last month you released your two-track single, Burden which hit #1 in Best of Miami: Techno last week. (Congratulations by the way!) Any other releases we should be ready for?
Thank you! Yes, there is actually a lot more music coming. I’ve been at it in the studio over the last few months. I came out with 12 new original tracks that I just split up and signed to 3 different great Techno labels. They will be released over the coming months.
We are also gearing up to launch the first MATTER+ label release. We are going to push a more stripped down tougher Techno sound on MATTER+ and keep Waveform Recordings going with the Tech-House vibes. The first 2 releases will be one of my own original EPs followed by a massive EP from Nikola Gala. Stayed tuned.
You haven’t played at Spybar Chicago in years (circa 2009?) How does it feel to be back?
I’m excited to be back, it has been too long. I feel like I’m in a great place musically and I’m really looking forward to sharing my current sounds with my Chicago fans.
DJ Tech Tools just released an article where you told them everything you keep in your gear bag. If you were able to put one artist in your bag and carry him/her around with you on your tour, who would you bring along?
Not sure I would want some high maintenance artist on the road with me. 😉 The only people that can take that place in my bag is my wife and son. It’s what I miss most when I’m on the road.
